We see such a rise in social media on platforms such as Tiktok, Instagram, and Pinterest that it almost seems like the way we view fashion is based upon other people's opinions rather than our own. We see this idea presented in the trend on tiktok that has been blowing up of "trends I hate and why". This trend has had an impact on the way the fashion industry has been viewed by the superficial idea of trends applicable to the consumer. The way social media has portrayed fashion is simply by the inspiration of others. Since the rise of social media, there has been a major decrease in individuality among consumers, influencers, and even celebrities. We see the chokehold the iconic Mui Mui mini-skirt and ballet flats had on us through the platform we know and love, Tiktok.

Mui Mui Ballet Flat & Mini Skirt

Pictured to the left is the trend we see trending on Tiktok about the Mui Mui miniskirt and ballet slipper duo. We can never see the true impact these have on the fashion industry because rather than calling them trends I see them as more of a fad. We saw this with the trend of cowboy boots with dresses, skirts, and baggy jean shorts. We see an immediate rise, skyrocketing sales, and then after a few months pass, we are onto the newest thing.

As for recent trends, we see the always popular OOTD videos, videos exposing fast fashion companies, trends, NYFW, and many more but for more specific trends we see that have impacted the industry has been the concept of "thrift hauls". This has become one of the largest trends throughout multiple platforms. Our generation is obsessed with the idea of watching someone else thrift to see what they get and how they style it for inspiration for themselves. This has a major impact on the fashion industry cross-channeling between platforms because it is raising the awareness of why more people need to start shopping more sustainably and thrifting is a great way to do so. The rise of social media always has us on our toes but as consumers, it is a constant way to evolve into something better.
